SPA Roll Call 4/23/12

Post

In the SP! Primer it mentioned not knowing if we would be printing physical issues of SP! magazine in the near future. Well, we went to the SPACE show and passed that Primer out to, well, everyone possible...and some of the immediate feedback actually sways us back towards thinking print issues may be something we should do.

There is still a lot of things about it to think about, and, we also know this website is not FINISHED yet, there are still a lot of things we need to set up in the software to really make things easy to follow, easy to use, and otherwise get it all humming like the well oiled machine it needs to be.

That said, there is also something to be said about the start small to get a snowman started basis of growth. It is something SP! magazine has fallen back on a number of times, in the course of our 20 some year history of trying to cover small press. So right now, let's get YOU involved. Tell us what you think! Tell us what you would like to see going on.

I think as much as I would like to see a printed book I would prefer first to see the site finishedple if  I love the community we have built here let's grow the site then start popping out mags

Glad to hear the SPACE show rocked. And hello, boards- I am Richard Caldwell, or nilskidoo on past incarnations of the SPA site. I contributed muchly to the SP! Nexus digital zines, and look forward to reviewing here as well.

I am currently working on building a website of my very own, to relaunch my long-running blog as a proper webzine. So my attentions may be divided in coming weeks, but if I can ever help anybody with anything, fire away!

Well, I am in full agreement that finishing the website is priority #1. I am not going to start reviewing again until I at least have the rest of the HOF archive back up. I have been going through a number of configure/debug things, and we need to get Facebook working on this site before we can really say "Ok, we're ready to social network with everyone".

My problem is not knowing everything that needs done, so if you SEE something not working, PLEASE REPORT IT…so we can get it looked at and fixed.

I haven't seen any bugs yet myself, but I do like the idea of building the house completely before throwing the doors wide open- especially where regards any print books. I actually have a marketing idea for that specifically that I'll share when the time's more appropriate.

One possible buggy- I just made my first post to the archives for review, and it is not on the homepage, although the review's thread is now here in the forums.

You just didn't click the category Reviews, go back in, and click like you're going to edit the entry…you will see it has a category selector, you just click the category you want the book in. I already moved it so it's now on the front page, but check that out so you see it, you'll have to look for your entry in the review category now. my thought is that books will stay in the REVIEW category until they are moved into a permanent category, when the review is printed in a print issue…which will make it easy for me when going to build the issue.

Most of the stuff in this system is basically just as easy to use…sometimes you just gotta take a minute to tune in to it, I find myself staring at answers and not seeing them all the time, lol

But that might just be the 90's talking there….

This is the only website I visit that loads at a snail's pace. It has crashed my browser 6 times in the last 24 hours, over the course of trying to post the last two reviews (which took a total of over an hour to post).

I want my account deleted immediately before whatever bugs in this system do any more harm to my computer.

um, seriously? The slowness is probably due to my own uploading of images to books, which I've had to do one at a time, and have been making the most of by opening 30 windows at a time. How about you take a couple days off, let me finish the operations (which I have been conducting 16 hours a day the past 2 days straight because we need this archive data fixed like, last week)

Please have some patience, and let the web host also chime in (Hello, Brian? Is there a reason for his browser to be crashing?) and we'll see if that all helps….It is highly unlikely that a browser crash would actually harm your computer. Is this an old computer? What browser are you using? I have has little trouble with opening pages 30 at a time…although when I actually hit upload on each, it may be causing a delay in the system. Let's have Brian chime in about it….

I can confirm the site is loading slow for me too and I am on it.

The site is running slow at the moment and I will make no excuses for that, I will just fix it asap. But there is nothing at all on this site that can, will or has done your computer any harm or that would crash your browser. You need to look elsewhere for answers if your computer is having problems....or present yourself with a better attitude and I will be more than happy to help you try to figure it out.

Dimestore and Selfpub site both now upgraded to the latest version of ocPortal along with facebook successfully installed with facebook logins functioning on both.

I have not tested it a bunch yet so please do let me know if you run into troubles.

Off to install activity feeds and get syndication to the Selfpub facebook page going. :)

I had to take a step back for a few days. I got frustrated and nothing would work out for me. Today I decided to attack it again, got on a roll and it all came together lol

Good news about Jay!

I understand that. I'd love to know exactly what you had to do…Way back when I had to figure these things out myself…lol. I'm going to announce tomorrow in the Jump Start Newsletter that we are looking to do a fundraiser to set you up on a dedicated server. Having previously had to  pay for one myself, and get thrown into managing the damn thing cause the company did ZERO updates of software (I hope the company you work with does maintenance of their dedicated servers, and ask em about it…I just remember it being a pain in the ass when I missed an update then the whole server was hacked, etc, etc.) I know that the SPA community will gladly support us doing whatever it takes to make Dimestore as fast and sleek as the "Mainstream" websites…and they will be happy that we have a pro like you in charge of the server…your becoming more and more successful, makes the SPA stronger as well, that's what good Strategic Partners do.

I just went on here after trying several times on my ipod to reactivate my account. Anyway, I was looking at the Creator section but it shows me as inactive and when you click on my page it is missing.
I am still active and I have just put out a new book recently. Lutu Warrior of the North #6 and I am working on a reboot of the series for the second voloume. This is my website Lutu Warrior of The North

If you know the user name of your previous account, I can merge it with this new one…just let me know.

The pages of the Hall of Fame section are still under re-construction. I am hoping to have most of it working this week. The BEST way to make sure I put up current, and updated, info about you, would be for you to submit an update on the web form for that. It's on the top navigation as Submitting…or just click this: Your Periodical Paradise (tm) - Self Publisher! Magazine
